The Elizabethan Gardens at The Outer Banks

One of the highlights of our stay on the Outer banks this past summer was a day trip we took to a local botanical garden, The Elizabethan Gardens. Located just a short drive southwest from Nag's Head on Roanoke Island is the town of Manteo. Here in the early 1950's a garden was created in the tradition of gardens popular in England during the time of Queen Elizabeth and to serve as a tribute to Sir Walter Raleigh's lost colony on Roanoke.

The gardens were expansive and well maintained, a representative mix of semi-tropicals, annuals, perennials and mature tree and shrub plantings.

A majestic, mature, Magnolia.

A variety statues and fountains were located throughout the winding trails, both in formal and woodland settings. Many had been acquired over the years from estates in the area and donated to the garden.

The family gathers to explore the garden.
